Welcome to the summer edition of the Savera UK newsletter!
This quarter, we have been pleased to welcome the news of the Domestic Abuse Act and its revolutionary changes to tackle domestic abuse here in the UK.
That being said, again another law has been passed that excludes migrant women and survivors of ‘honour’-based abuse. Campaigners and many organisations like Savera UK have been campaigning and fighting to ensure migrant women and survivors of harmful practices are part of the wider agenda, but again they are falling through the net.
Women with insecure immigration status in the UK are often reluctant to report abuse to authorities out of fear of deportation or destitution. They also have no recourse to public funds, which makes it difficult for them to leave their abusive environment. The new Domestic Abuse Act does not protect all women and migrant women are being left behind.
Savera UK will continue its mission in tackling ‘honour’-based abuse and harmful practices. On 14th July, we remember those killed in the name of so-called ‘honour’ for the National Day of Memory. For our annual event, we will be discussing the Domestic Abuse Act and how it will impacts migrant women and those at risk of ‘honour’-based abuse. Guest speakers will include Domestic Abuse Commissioner, Nicole Jacobs.
In organisational news, on behalf of myself, the team, and the board, I want to give a very special thanks to our Campaign and Youth Engagement Officer Shauna, who will be leaving the organisation to pursue a new adventure.
Her contribution to the organisation has been immensely appreciated and she will be missed. I also want to thank the team, Board, Advisory and Youth Advisory Board for their continuous commitment and contribution, as well as everyone who has helped us through this difficult eighteen months.
Last, but not least is we would like to say a very special thanks to Rachael who has stepped down from the Savera UK Board. Your contribution has without a doubt helped Savera UK move forward and grow.
